Web Design Timeline

Answering your Frequently Asked Questions:

A comprehensive website design timeline is essential for communication between the designer and the brand. This can be especially helpful for you as the client to know concrete goals and expectations to ensure successful launches or re-launches of your websites.

This is an outline I typically use when beginning any web design project, of course the timeline can change - but the steps are essentially the same!

  1. Research and Planning
  2. Design
  3. Creating/Gathering Content
  4. Development
  5. Testing
  6. Review (Site Walkthrough)
  7. Launch
  8. Maintenance

Now let's Dive into each step so you know exactly what to expect!

Research & Planning (1-2 weeks):

After your initial consult and first payment is made we being formulating the steps necessary to accomplish your project goals. Asking ourselves the following questions:

  • What does the website need to accomplish?
  • Is it a landing page, or full comprehensive design/redesign?
  • Is it an e-commerce platform?
  • Is it both?

Next, we curate the site's goals and design to the brand or company's needs. We do this by completing market research - looking at what is working for other competitors and what's not.

Design (1-3 weeks):

We start at the beginning, building off your company's logo/brand goals and integrating administrative information before moving on to the actual design or what I like to call the "Pretty" part! Next we walk through each page as a prospective consumer, is the homepage engaging, inviting and user-friendly? Is the site optimized for desktop and mobile users? Is it obvious where to post questions, comments or concerns?

Essentially we go from top to bottom of each web page ensuring functionality as well as professionalism and design aesthetic suited to your brand.

Creating/Gathering Content (1-2 Weeks):

I always allow time to create unique and quality content to create trust between a brand/company and their potential super-fans. All of which must have value and impact on the site's SEO.

Never underestimate the power of well-informed content on a user's experience. This includes copy writing, mockups, professional photography, custom branded designs and widgets. Content for your site should include headlines, titles, and/or captions for products or services. These bodies of text should both inform and engage prospective buyers and be written in a voice that reflects your client’s brand.

Imagine the site as an extension of your brand or company. Everything on the site should look and feel like it comes from the same place.

Development & Integrating (1-2 Weeks):

This is typically combined with the previous phase, but once we have established the site's goals consistent to your brand we now have to integrate any additional features that will make your website stand out from the rest!

Things like:

  • Order Forms
  • Online Shopping Experience
  • Newsletter Incentives
  • Personalization (Returning visitors etc.)
  • Event Managers
  • Scheduling
  • IDX for Real Estate
  • Testimonials/ Reviews
  • & So Much More!

BETA Testing (Max 2 Weeks):

At this point you will have received an initial proof of your website through our partner portal, and we work together to ensure buttons are working, design is cohesive and meets with your goals, and making sure the user-experience is seamless.

It never hurts to ask trusted family and friends to test out the site preview and see how things work, how do they interact with the site? This stage is useful for gathering any final revisions we need to make before the Final Site Walkthrough and Review.

Review/Final Site Walkthrough (1-2 Hour Session):

After testing, revisions and final approval of the design and functionality of the site, I always schedule a site-walkthrough with you. This is a 1-2 hour session by video or phone conference call so we can go top to bottom through each page making sure payment methods are setup, shipping is correct, services are correct and so on.

Some things to consider and talk about in the process are:

  • A Plan for Launch Day
  • What will be done to notify customers of the site and it's uses?
  • A Content Calendar / Maintenance Schedules
  • What will be published on the website and when is the best time for regular check-ins?

Site Launch/Maintenance:

Congratulations! You've made it to launch day. You’ve reached the end of our web design timeline and successfully implemented all our goals for your brand in the project plan. While the development process is not always easy, a successful launch is a rewarding experience and worthy of celebration.

After launch we do a final site test once it's published as well as beginning a 30-day site monitor if you have opted-in for ongoing site maintenance. By becoming an ongoing partner, we regularly review your site, check-in with you to ensure updates are made in a timely manner, and keep you advised of the latest trends!

Your feedback is always appreciated so we can continue to improve our partner/client experiences.
